Dining with Terrorists

Al Jazeera has a six part series Dining with Terrorists.

Since the events of September 11 the word “terrorism” has acquired a new political dynamic.

Wars are waged and many lives have been lost in the name of combatting “terror”, strict legislation has been passed to prevent acts of “terrorism”.

It is a definition that is highly subjective and what constitutes a “terrorist” depends on where you live and what you believe in.

In a new six part series the author and journalist Phil Rees travelled to South Asia, the Middle East and the Americas to explore the debate and meaning of the word “terrorism”.

The Asian Dub Foundation are taking a well earned break before they continue to liberate the world, next to South America for shows in Colombia and Mexico followed by some dates in Russia. 2008 has been one of the busiest yet for the band with the worldwide release of new album ‘Punkara’ and a massive European tour that kept them on the road for nearly three months. Big respect to all that have supported on their travels!

The video for Burning Fence from Punkara cries out wisdom from the streets!
“Climb on board the mothership revolution,
the true universal is the one solution,
or else you’ll sit on a burning fence,
don’t matter what your for or what your against.
Who is going to be next to rise up?”

christmas on mars

From the crazed band the Flaming Lips finally comes the release of Chistmas on Mars, a movie eight years in the making.  Christmas On Mars arrives complete with a lot of imagery and themes that long-term fans of the Oklahoma psychedelicists will recognise from their albums: foetuses, outer space, the march of science, death, and the way, as a track from 2006’s At War With the Mystics put it, “the will always negates defeat”.

It was a saga for the band to make the low-budget even while band member Steven Drozd was the lead and addicted to herion. At times they were suggestive of a project that was never going to get finished, an idea too far even for a band who have based their career on making the improbable happen. Here was frontman Wayne Coyne gamely building sets from junk in the driveway of his home in a “ghetto-esque” district of Oklahoma City, while his terrifying neighbours looked menacingly on. A film with a look similar to American Astronaut it shows a future that feels like a working class diner with a bunch of bitter drunks. (American Astronaut makers also have a new film coming out Stingray Sam.)

It would be a shame to think that all that exertion just went into making a shonky film that no one but Flaming Lips diehards would be interested in seeing. As it turns out, their efforts weren’t entirely in vain. If they hadn’t made Christmas On Mars, they wouldn’t have recorded the soundtrack, and the soundtrack is fantastic.

Although not a film with a strong narrative to follow it has some tripped out shots and interesting music that create a strange world.

watch the whole movie at http://www.christmasonmarsmovie.com/

You can feel the spirit move you and watch it in a double header with a Junkie’s Christmas with William S. Burroughs.

ho.ho.ho.

War wins the election

“No matter who wins the election, it doesn’t matter. It’s not going to stop.” – August 22,2008, Gary Jackson, foundering member of Blackwater

Whoever wins the US elections will ‘face a crisis’ and ‘have to make some tough decisions’. and one thing is for certain; now more than ever we are becoming a global police state and mercenaries will profit.

review ‘the war and peace speech’ and watch War Made Easy.

War Made Easy reaches into the Orwellian memory hole to expose a 50-year pattern of government deception and media spin that has dragged the United States into one war after another from Vietnam to Iraq. Narrated by actor and activist Sean Penn, the film exhumes remarkable archival footage of official distortion and exaggeration from LBJ to George W. Bush, revealing in stunning detail how the American news media have uncritically disseminated the pro-war messages of successive presidential administrations.

Back TUVA Future : Ondar

bb

Filmmaker Ralph Leighton says, “This was the highlight of my recent trip to Vladivostok, Russia, where the 1999 film GENGHIS BLUES won the Governor’s Prize at the Pacific Meridian Film Festival. It features Tuvan throat-singer ONDAR and the voice of Richard Feynman.

when I watched Gengis Blues (torrent) years ago it made me laugh, it made my cry, it put Tuva on the map. I was thrilled to see Huun Huur Tu on tour and love the horse gallup tempo.

the black knight satellite

Black Knight is the name given to a radar blip discovered in 1960. This mystery satellite was found in a polar orbit, something neither the US nor the Soviets had accomplished. It was several times larger and several times heavier than anything capable of being launched with 1960 rockets. It shouldn’t have been there, but it was.

If that weren’t enough, ham operators began receiving odd messages from the Black Knight. One operator decoded a series of these messages as a star map. The map centered on Epsilon Bootes as seen from the earth 13,000 years ago. Remember, stars don’t move very far even after 13,000 years, and Epsilon Bootes is moving towards us. Only the neighboring stars appear different after that amount of time. Was the Black Knight an alien calling card?

Perhaps the strangest effect associated with the Black Knight is the Long Delay Echo (LDE). The effect observed is that radio or television signals sent into space bounce back seconds (or even days) later, as if recorded and retransmitted by a satellite. They didn’t begin with the Black Knight, but they were part of its mystery. Keel places the earliest LDEs in the 1920s. It’s not in Keel’s book, but in 1974 another mystery entered earth orbit. No radar saw it. No ham operator listened to it. One man contacted it- or rather, was contacted by it. That man was science fiction author Philip K. Dick (1928-1982).

Phillip Kindred Dick blew my mind when I discovered his works through a friend in the early 1990’s. At the time Blade Runner was the cyberpunk classic film, but PDK’s books still seemed obscure to most. since then several more films have been made based on his books have stacked up, Total Recall, Confessions d’un Barjo, Screamers, Imposter, Minority Report, Paycheck, A Scanner Darkly, and Next.

In production is a adaptation of Radio Free Albemuth one of my favorite of his books. It deals with his 1974 experience of being contacted by the Black Knight, or what he called VALIS, the Vast Active Living Intelligence System. VALIS revealed itself to Dick as an ancient satellite from another world. It was sent here long ago by three-eyed, crab-clawed beings from a planet orbiting Fomalhaut. They built our civilization, taught us writing and science, then returned to their own world. VALIS was left behind to prod certain individuals when civilization needed a boost.

Dick wrote down his many “mystic” experiences. When he died eight years later, he was still unsure of their origin or their meaning. Left behind was what he called the Exegesis, an 8000- page, one-million-word continuing dialogue with himself written late, late at night. This is where we go to find the Black Knight’s return.

Exegesis remains unpublished in its original form but became the material for several other book. Radio Free Albemuth being one of them. Go and read the book now.

There are also 2 more movies based on PDK in the works, a sequel to Screamers, and PDK biopic, called The Owl in Daylight. Maybe all this new activity is actually being created by the PDK Android that is M.I.A.? is this english model Actroid now his new wife?

Here is a pic from the movie production, Radio Free Albemuth.
